Kids Fishing Derby – 2026
Young Anglers Brave the Weather at the May 30th Kids Fishing Derby

Fishing Derby Volunteers
Despite chilly temperatures, gusty winds, and periods of rain, the Philmont Rod & Gun Club’s Kids Fishing Derby on May 30 was a tremendous success. While the weather may not have been ideal, the fish were biting, the kids were smiling, and everyone enjoyed a memorable day on the water.
Young anglers arrived eager to cast their lines and test their fishing skills. Throughout the day, fish continued to cooperate, providing plenty of action and excitement for participants of all ages. From first-time fishermen to more experienced young anglers, every child had the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of a catch.
What stood out most wasn’t the weather—it was the enthusiasm and determination shown by the kids. Rain jackets and umbrellas couldn’t dampen the excitement as fish were reeled in and stories of “the one that got away” were shared among friends and family.
The annual Kids Fishing Derby is about more than just catching fish. It provides an opportunity for children to spend time outdoors, learn about fishing and conservation, and create lasting memories with family and friends. Judging by the smiles seen throughout the day, the event accomplished exactly that.
The Philmont Rod & Gun Club would like to thank all of the volunteers, parents, sponsors, and supporters who helped make the event possible. Their dedication ensures that local youth have opportunities to experience the outdoors and develop a lifelong appreciation for fishing and conservation.
While Mother Nature challenged us with cold, wind, and rain, the young anglers proved that a little bad weather can’t stop a great day of fishing. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the water next year!
